The Kingdom of Fife has some of the most picturesque towns and villages in Scotland and the East Neuk, in particular, has some of the best. Situated on the east coast, close to St Andrews, the villages are linked by the Fife Coastal Path.
The villages are traditional fishing villages which have grown up around the harbour. The architectural style is of old stone cottages with crow-stepped gables and pantiled roofs. This has given the villages a charming feel and makes the area popular with tourists and locals alike.
There are many things to do in the East Neuk. There are three tidal pools - at Cellardyke, Pittenweem and St Monans - for those who like a refreshing dip! The coastal path has many stop off points of interest along the way - Caiplie Cave and St. Fillan’s Cave among them.
The Pittenweem Arts Festival is a huge draw for art lovers and normally happens in August. There are a few excellent farm shops in the area. Of course, being a fishing community, there is plenty of fresh fish and shellfish (when in season) to be had close to the harbour.
The villages are well catered for with primary schools in Lundin Links, Upper Largo, Elie, St Monans, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail. There is a secondary school in Anstruther - Waid Academy - which serves the surrounding area including the East Neuk. Most of the villages also have a church and a pharmacy.
Being so close to St Andrews, there are lots of golf courses in the East Neuk, primarily links courses close to the sea. There are links courses at Crail, Anstruther and Elie & Earlsferry. There are two inland courses at Charleton and Dumbarnie. Lots of choice! There are also tennis courts in Anstruther, a karting club in Crail and a wide range of watersports available in Elie.
There are many well established bus routes throughout the area with links to St Andrews, Cupar and Leven. There are plenty of shops up and down the coast with a large supermarket in Anstruther.
There are lots of craft shops, coffee shops and tearooms which are particularly popular in the summer.
Eating out and having a drink will not be a problem here. There is a huge selection of pubs and restaurants in the East Neuk, from the freshest fish and chips to the finest dining in North East Fife.
