Howe of Fife Area Guide

Guide to Howe of Fife

Nestled under the Lomond Hills and running eastward towards Cupar is the Howe of Fife which is a large area of small villages with breathtaking views. The principle villages are Auchtermuchty, Falkland and Ladybank. Others are Collessie, Dunshalt, Freuchie, Gateside, Kingskettle, Letham, Pitlessie and Strathmiglo.

All the villages offer good driving links to the M90 motorway which offers excellent connections to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth and Stirling. There are good bus links to Cupar, St Andrews, Glenrothes and beyond. Bell Baxter High School in Cupar is the main secondary school in the area and there are buses from The Howe into the school in the morning and back home after school. Ladybank also offers a train station on the East Coast main line with links to Edinburgh and London to the south and Dundee and Aberdeen to the north east. It also connects to the central and north-west Highlands via Perth and Inverness.

Most of the villages have a local shop or small supermarket. There are also a number of excellent farm shops offering fresh, local produce. Most villages have a local pub offering lunches and dinners. Auchtermuchty and Ladybank have doctors surgeries. There is a small hospital in St Andrews with larger hospitals in Kirkcaldy and Dundee.

The larger villages all have a primary school, church, small supermarket, pub, bowling club and pharmacy. Auchtermuchty and Ladybank both also have doctors surgeries, hair salons and a chinese takeaway. Falkland has a golf club, a bank and a wide range of gift shops along with some hotels, restaurants and cafés. The golf course at Ladybank is well known throughout the world of golf as a British Open qualifying course. Of the smaller villages there are primary schools in Freuchie, Kingskettle, Pitlessie, Springfield and Strathmiglo. You can find churches in Freuchie, Collessie, Springfield and Monimail. There are local pubs in Freuchie, Pitlessie, Strathmiglo, Springfield, Kingskettle and Kettlebridge.

The area is a haven for walkers with many woodland walks and trails. The Lomond Hills offer a more challenging day out but offer breathtaking views over The Howe towards Cupar and beyond, south towards the Pentland Hills, south of Edinburgh, and north towards Perthshire. There is also Falkland Palace, The Scottish Deer Centre and some great farm centres to keep the kids happy on a sunny or rainy day.
