The town is believed to have grown around the site of Cupar Castle, which was the seat of the sheriff and was owned by the earls of Fife. The area became a centre for judiciary as the county of Fife and as a market town catering for both cattle and sheep calling it our market town of Cupar.

Cupar has an unusual golf course on the side of a hill to the South of town at Hill of Tarvit. The Club was founded on 7th November 1855. Cupar Golf Club is rich with history and is probably the oldest nine-hole club in the world. The Kingarrock course at Hill Tarvit Mansion house uses hickory shafted clubs, in the original style.

Cupar Sports Centre has a 25m swimming pool, badminton courts, squash courts and a fitness suite. The swimming pool is the base for Cupar and District Swimming Club. Cupar is home to Cupar Cricket Club, founded in 1884. The club celebrated its 125th anniversary in the 2009 season. Cupar also offers two Bowling Greens in which one is the oldest in Fife, third oldest in Scotland, the other offers great social events for all ages.

Education

Cupar host’s two Primary Schools, one Secondary School and a College.

Castlehill Primary is located on Ceres Road and St. Columbus Primary is at the other end of town on North Union Street. Bell Baxter High School is located on Carslogie Road, serves both the town and surrounding villages. The SRUC College (formerly Elmwood College) has three main campuses situated in the town and surrounding area. The college has been praised as a centre for excellence in golf-related studies and specialising in land-based education.

Transport

Cupar railway station serves the town of Cupar in Fife, the station has two platforms in which are both wheelchair accessible. Bus Service – a very regular bus service runs to St. Andrews, Dundee, Glenrothes etc. In Cupar there is a town bus that specializes in the local area.

Cupar has a great selection of supermarkets (Co-op, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl) so no need to travel far for your weekly shop. Cupar offers an amazing selection of Bakers, Butchers, Chemists, DIY Stores and also some lovely Boutiques and Gift Shops if you fancy treating yourself.

Cupar has a good range of eating places, anything from a light snack at lunchtime or a juicy steak for dinner. There is also a super range of Indian Restaurants, Chinese and Fish and Chip Bars.
