St Andrews Area Guide

Guide to St Andrews

St Andrews is to many the crown jewel of North East Fife. Set on the east coast of Scotland, it is famous for it’s university, the oldest in Scotland, it’s golden sandy beaches and, of course, it is known worldwide as The Home of Golf. It is named after Saint Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, after his remains were washed up on the beach after a storm. The castle and cathedral grounds are a fascinating trip through time. The cathedral itself was abandoned in 1561 after a mob had destroyed the interior during the Reformation with the stone being used to build the harbour further down the hill.

Today St Andrews is a bustling town with a vibrant town centre including lots of restaurants, bars and pubs. You have a huge choice when eating out in St Andrews - pub grub to fine dining, a fish supper to a langoustine lasagne!

St Andrews lost it’s train station years ago but still enjoys excellent bus links to Dundee (via Leuchars where you can connect with the East Coast main line) up to every ten minutes. There are also regular bus services to Cupar, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The town has three mainstream primary schools and a new secondary school, Madras, on the west side of town. There are also a few private schools catering from nursery years right through to secondary. For the action enthusiast St Andrews has lots of activities for you - windsurfing, paddleboarding and landyachting can all be done on the West Sands - home of the famous Chariots of Fire scene of the race along the beach. For those not so keen on that there are the Botanic Gardens and the St Andrews Aquarium. The New Picture House on North Street was built in 1930 and shows all the latest films with comfy seats and a choice of popcorn.

St Andrews is great for shopping. There are lots of independent shops in the town centre and several supermarkets (Aldi, Morrisons, Tesco Express, Sainsburys Local and an M&S food hall).

There are many villages surrounding St Andrews, all with excellent transport links into town. Balmullo to the north west has a great location close to St Andrews, Cupar and Dundee. It has a great primary school, a small supermarket, pub and doctors surgery. Leuchars is on the East Coast main line so has excellent transport links. It is close to Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve for great walks on the beach or in the pine forest. It has a primary school, shop and doctors surgery. Guardbridge is situated on the Eden Estuary and is a great birdwatching area.

It has a primary school, a local shop, bowling club and pub. Strathkinness is close to St Andrews and has a lovely church, primary school and a pub serving food. To the south of St Andrews you find the village of Kingsbarns. It is located on the main road between St Andrews and the East Neuk and offers great beach walks. Golf was first played at Kingsbarns in 1793 but the course was used for mining during the Second World War and reverted to rough pasture land. Golf was resurrected in the early 2000’s - the only Scottish links course to be created for over 70 years. Largoward has great transport links between St Andrews, Cupar, the East Neuk and Leven. It has both a primary school and church.
